Lakeside DayBreak Dementia Support is hosting a live readers’ theater performance in which local individuals living with memory changes will share their personal stories.
The event will take place on Monday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, located at San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.
Members of the cast will share how they live, cope, and manage life after being diagnosed with various forms of dementia. Anyone who knows someone living with memory loss will gain valuable insights from hearing these true-life experiences, which encompass courage, sadness, and humor in dealing with everyday challenges.
The script for the performance was developed from a series of weekly DayBreak discussion groups that have been ongoing since mid-February. The format is based on “To Whom I May Concern” (TWIMC), a program created in Stamford, Connecticut, by Maureen Matthews. This program was designed to give a voice to people diagnosed with progressive brain illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders that cause cognitive decline.
The Lakeside DayBreak initiative is led by Elly Contreras, whose husband Ramiro has been living with dementia since 2015. Elly is dedicated to helping others understand issues related to memory loss, risk factors, and social isolation, with the goal of making Lakeside a “dementia-inclusive community.”
