How much do young adults know about the foreign influences shaping life in the Lake Chapala region? A workshop held Tuesday, September 9 for students enrolled at the Centro Universitario de Chapala (CU-Chapala) was designed to gauge and boost their level of understanding on the topic.
Approximately 100 students gathered around the swimming pool at Hotel Montecarlo and broke into small groups to tackle a short questionnaire. They then shared their conclusions and observations with the other participants.
Asked when and why foreigners first arrived in the Ribera de Chapala, some students correctly identified the arrival of Spanish conquistadores in 1530. Others pointed to Europeans and North Americans who began settling around the end of the 19th century, followed by the first significant wave of expat immigrants through the first half of the 20th century.
