There are already “slight indications” of a fourth wave of Covid-19 infections in Mexico,Mexican Health Minister Jorge Alcocer said Monday.
Although the minister pleaded with the media not to make a big deal from his comments, only a few days earlier, Hugo López-Gatell, his deputy and the government’s chief coronavirus spokesperson, said a fourth wave this winter could not be ruled out.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also issued a warning this week. Even if half of Mexico’s population is fully vaccinated against Covid, new outbreaks and surges are likely to occur over the next few months, PAHO Director Carissa Etienne said Wednesday, noting that cases on the American continent rose by 23 percent in the last week, while more than 15,000 people died from the disease.
Almost 300,000 people in this country have died after becoming infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The PAHO director speculated that Covid infections in Mexico will probably increase after recent mass events such as the Day of the Dead celebrations and the Formula 1 Gand Prix in Mexico City, which drew more than 350,000 spectators.
