Antonio Pérez Garibay, the larger-than-life father of Tapatio Formula One race driver Sergio “Checo” Perez and a federal congressman with President Lopez Obrador’s Morena party, hopes to run for governor of Jalisco.
Pérez Garibay had previously said he would seek Morena’s nomination in the 2024 presidential election. That door quickly shut when two strong frontrunners came to the fore: Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum (see story right). One of these two is almost certain to get the nomination. He has now turned his focus on Jalisco. And without specifying how he will go about it, Pérez Garibay has vowed to end insecurity in Jalisco, boasting he possesses “all the elements to be the best governor this state has ever had.”
