It may seem counterintuitive to use a sport built on delivering punches as a tool for peace, but the federal government has a different perspective.
This week, President Claudia Sheinbaum unveiled “Boxeando por la paz” (Boxing for Peace), a program that will employ up to 5,000 boxers as community instructors, providing them with a monthly salary of 9,500 pesos and health insurance. In turn, these fighters will offer free classes to 100,000 children nationwide, using the discipline of the ring as a means to steer youth away from violence and towards a path of structure and respect.
