Longtime Lakeside resident John Whitaker Price died suddenly on September 6 while playing tennis in Ajijic.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1942, Price graduated from Harvard (Economics, 1964) and Queens (Doctor of Medicine, 1968). He interned at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, where he started one of the earliest casualty officer programs in 1969. Price met his wife Ann while in grade eight.
From 1970 to 1979, the couple raised their three children in Guelph, Ontario, while Price established himself as a talented and compassionate family physician. In 1979 they left Canada for Marietta, Georgia, where he continued his work in family medicine.
Far away places continued to beckon. In 1997, they left for Gozo, Malta, where they stayed for three years. They spent the last 13 years in Chapala.
The couple celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary this past August.
Price was an avid sportsman, enjoying nothing more than an afternoon motorcycle ride, or a game of tennis or hockey with a group of friends, followed by a pint at his favorite pub. One of his greatest joys was gathering friends together for animated discussions on wide-ranging subjects. Price’s position was never in doubt.
Price is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Jordan (Liz) of St. Inigoes, Maryland, Ralph (Stephanie) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Julie of Sarnia, Ontario; and grandchildren, Whitaker, Abigail, Lucas and Nicholas. He is also remembered by his brothers Peter and Gordon, and extended family.
A gathering of family and friends will be held in Guelph in December.
