Horst Wilhelm Peter
Lakeside resident Horst Wilhelm Peter died July 25 at the age of 88 at the Hospital San Antonio from complications following surgery.
Horst was born in Berlin, Germany on December 3, 1935. Life started out challenging as the world was facing the beginning of World War II and Berlin was at the center of it. The war brought devastation to Germany and like many young adults at that time, he decided to try and make a new life for himself, moving to Toronto, Canada in 1957.
Horst worked hard to establish himself in his new country, working many trades. He eventually became a chemist and sales representative for a company manufacturing specialty flooring and coating products. He married Waltraud, also from Berlin, and the couple had two sons. He later became a Canadian citizen.
In 1976, Horst moved the family to Dallas, Texas, and started a business specializing in commercial flooring applications. He later moved with his second wife, Mary Louise Rodgers, to Colorado, where, with his sons, he began another business, selling and installing carpet and tile products. He became a U.S. citizen in 2005.
Horst and Louise moved to Ajijic in 2013. Here, he found the peace and serenity he had sought since those war years in Berlin. He was always grateful for the warm welcome from the Mexican and expat communities.
In addition to Mary Louise Peter, his loving wife of 45 years, Horst is survived by sons Mark Peter (Tara) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; Derek Peter (Cheryl) of Castle Rock, Colorado; and grandchildren Alyssa Peter, Mason Peter, Kelsey Peter and Thomas (TJ) Peter.
Horst will be remembered for his passion for life, lifelong wisdom and persistent pursuit of overcoming hardships to make a better life for himself and his loved ones.
