Paying for your refrendo at Oxxo is easy, if you know how to send a text message

Although the unpopular car tax (tenencia) has been scrapped in Jalisco, owners of Mexican-plated vehicles registered in the state will still have to pay the annual registration renewal fee (refrendo).

This year’s fee has gone up to 416 pesos.

However, those who pay in the first three months of the year receive a 30-percent discount – 291 pesos.

Pay in April and May and you will receive a 15 percent discount – 354 pesos. The full 416-peso fee must be paid in June and July.

From August onward, late charges and fines will be applied.

A 40-peso donation to the Jalisco Red Cross is optional.

There are several options for payment, including via the Internet.  The most commonly used method is to go to one of the many State Tax Collection offices (recaudadoras) in the state. All you need is your license plate number. For a full list of offices go to www.jalisco.gob.mx/sefin. (For Chapala, see photo below.) Lines, however, especially in the first two months of the year, can be long.

Banks and some convenience stores and supermarkets will also accept payment but you first need to obtain a línea de captura (number) via a text message.

To do this you must send a text  (see left photo above) to the number 52501. In the text space write: ADUEDO, followed by a space, your Mexican vehicle’s license plate number (e.g. JGK5386), followed by a space and then the word  TIENDAS if you intend to pay at Soriana, Comercial Mexicana, 7-Eleven or Oxxo; or the name of the bank: either Bancomer, Banamex, Scotiabank, HSBC, Banorte, Santander or Bajio.

Within seconds of sending the message you will receive an answer (see right photo above) with the amount you owe (adeudo)and the línea de captura number. (The Red Cross donation will be automatically included, however.) You will have the rest of the day to make the payment at the chosen bank or the four aforementioned stores.  Simply show the  cashier the message with the number, pay the amount indicated and keep your receipt.

According to the State Finance Secretariat, your new tarjeta de circulaccion (registration card) will be sent to your home address within three weeks.  If it fails to arrive within this time period, you can call the Direccion de Impuestos Estatales at (33) 2668-1700, ext. 33180 to advise them of the fact.

To pay your referendo by internet go to www.jalisco.gob.mx/sefin and click on “Servicios en línea” and then choose “Pago de refrendo, tenencia e infracciones.” You will be asked to type in your license plate number and car serial number (found on your registration card). The next step is to choose  ‘Agregar adeudo a su pago’ and make your payment via debit or credit card. Tick the Red Cross 40-peso donation box if you wish to contribute.

Delivery of your registration card will be the same as above.
