President Felipe Calderon has named former Guadalajara Mayor and Jalisco Governor Francisco Ramirez Acuña (2001-2006) as the new Mexican ambassador to Spain.
Ramirez served as Calderon’s minister of the Interior (Gobernacion) from 2006 to 2008 before being elected to the federal Chamber of Deputies (lower house) as a National Action Party (PAN) proportional representation candidate. The diplomatic appointment will mean Ramirez will step down from his senior role in the presidential campaign of PAN candidate Josefina Vasquez Mota.
