Towering city center monument nears completion

Guadalajara city hall will inaugurate downtown’s latest public sculpture,  “El Palomar” (The Dove), on Thursday, March 9, Mayor Pablo Lemus announced.

pg4a“It’s appropriate because March 9 is the anniversary of the birth of Luis Barragán (the designer of the work who died in 1988),” he said.

The famed Jalisco-born architect is the only Mexican to have won the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious prize in architecture. Only houses designed by Barragán were ever built in Guadalajara, even though his sculptures can be seen in many other cities in Mexico.

Barragán’s designs for “El Palomar” were archived for half a century when the project, originally slated for a subdivision in Tlajomulco, was shelved.

The 40-meter tall monolithic work is going up at a “mini glorieta” on the new stretch of the Paseo Alcalde at the intersection of 16 de Septiembre, Leandro Valle and Colegiales in the Guadalajara city center.
