End Polio Now dinner planned for October 30

In an effort to raise awareness and funds to continue the fight against polio, the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club is hosting an End Polio Now Mexican Fiesta on Friday, October 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Montecarlo in Chapala.

During Polio Awareness Month, Rotary International urges clubs around the world to host marches, programs and events designed to encourage doctors and mothers to end their complacency and to immunize babies against this crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease.

Polio has been eradicated in all but three countries but the influx of immigrants from Syria into other areas represents a serious threat of a new epidemic.

“Mexico was the first country to receive the polio vaccinations and remains polio-free today,” says Barbara Wilson, past Rotary Foundation Chairman. “We are living in an almost polio-free world, but polio knows no boundaries.”

Wilson and her husband Bill participated in National Polio Immunization Day in India in February 2013. A total of 2.3 million volunteers immunized 176 million children on that day.

Proceeds from the dinner go directly to Rotary International’s End Polio Now! Program. Every dollar Rotary International raises through 2018 (up to US$35 million a year) will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for polio eradication efforts.

Tickets for the buffet of Mexican food, the evening of live music and dancing and traditional entertainment are on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones or from any Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club member. There will be a cash bar available. Ticket requests and questions can be sent to Sandra Loridans, event chairman, at This email address is being protected from spambots.
