Azteca Stadium modernized for the world stage

Mexico City’s renovated Azteca Stadium, one of the most iconic venues in world soccer, shows off its new face to the world on Saturday, March 28 when the Mexican national team faces Portugal in a friendly match.

pg2bThe stadium has been closed for almost a year during a major US$75-100 million makeover for the 2026 World Cup, when it will host five games, including the tournament opener featuring Mexico against South Africa on June 11.

Now rebranded with the sponsor’s name as Estadio Banorte, the modernized 90,000-capacity stadium is more aesthetically pleasing, boasting brand-new seating and roofing, massive LED screens, a new hybrid high-durability grass pitch, enhanced lighting, upgraded accessibility, improved road access and parking, and a new commercial zone, among other features.

Saturday’s game, unfortunately, will not feature Portugal’s superstar, 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who is injured. Tickets for the game sold out quickly, partly based on the likelihood that this would be a last opportunity to see one of the greatest players ever in action before he retires.
