Chapala stages massive folk dance festival

Chapala will be swept up in a flood of lively music, dazzling movement and brilliant colors on Sunday, April 26, as the city hosts its third annual Monumental Ballet Folklórico spectacle, branded by the state government for the second time as La Fiesta al Estilo Jalisco.

pg1bThe festival will bring together more than 2,000 dancers representing at least 100 folklórico troupes, including ones from Chapala and eight other Jalisco municipalities, and others coming in from Nayarit, Michoacan and Mexico City. They will perform individually at different points in the downtown area throughout the afternoon, starting at noon.

The celebration culminates with a dancers’ parade, departing from the north end of  Avenida Madero at 5 p.m., and swirling down main street to spread out along the entire length of the waterfront Malecón for the grand finale. There, with Lake Chapala featured as the backdrop, the participants will simultaneously present the iconic Jalisco dances set to the tunes of  “El Son de la Negra and “El Jarabe Tapatio,” otherwise known as the Mexican hat dance.
