The Teatro Degollado has opened a free exhibit marking the iconic Guadalajara venue’s 160th anniversary.

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” opened in Guadalajara on Thursday, July 16, with IMAX screenings at two locations: Cinépolis Galerías and Cinépolis Fórum Tlaquepaque.

I must have missed something in the publicity about two of the current exhibitions at MUSA, the University of Guadalajara’s Museo de Arte. I never expected to be so delighted by not only one, but two shows — both on the second floor of the graceful, Art Deco building, and both by male artists with an obvious love of depicting the real world, from people, animals and landscapes to architecture and still lifes.

Guadalajara’s sole professional dance company, the Ballet de Jalisco, is set to captivate audiences at the end of this month with a production of “Swan Lake,” one of classical ballet’s most beloved masterpieces.  The six performances are from July 24 through August 2 at the Teatro Degollado.

The aging Tres de Marzo Stadium in Zapopan is being transformed into a modern, multifunctional entertainment complex. Announced this week, (also aging) British crooner Rod Stewart — but at 81 still commanding stages worldwide — will inaugurate the renamed Coliseo GNP Seguros with a concert on September 11.

Chamber music

The Higinio Ruvalcaba Chamber Orchestra, featuring Universidad de Guadalajara music school ex-alumni and current students, presents a program featuring works by Mozart (“Così fan tutte”), Beethoven and Schubert.
