Guadalajara boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has never been one to shirk a challenge. He faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. when he was just 23 years old and beat and tied with the fearsome Gennady Golovkin in two thrilling encounters.
On Saturday, November 2, Alvarez (52-1-2) will jump two weight classes to take on Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light-heavyweight crown. Kovalev, 36, has won 29 of his 34 fights by knock outs and fought 17 world title bouts.
If Alvarez dethrones Kovalev, it will be his fourth world title at different weights – an achievement few boxers have ever realized.
“Kovalev is a dangerous puncher, and he’s naturally the bigger man, but that’s the kind of challenges and risks that I like to face,” Alvarez said.
According to Alvarez’s manager Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo will face Golovkin for a third time in 2020. “The world wants to see it, and Golovkin deserves it,” De La Hoya said recently.
