Metro area is stop-start nightmare for drivers

Guadalajara is the ninth worst city in the world for driving times according to a joint study carried out by the companies Castrol and Tom Tom. The researchers visited 78 cities around the world and discovered that drivers in Guadalajara lose 33.24 percent of their total journey time idling. The average driver in the city will hit the brakes 24,840 times a year.

How I got rolling on Mi Bici!

Mi Bici, the eight-week-old public bike share system that is slated to revolutionize non-motorized transportation in Guadalajara, seems to be one of those things that should be about as difficult as cooking a hamburger. But I say this recalling the friend who once asked how to avoid ending up with a burger that’s black on the outside and raw on the inside. So the moral is that if nobody tells you crucial details, you may have problems.

The taco that goes on and on and on

Guadalajara set a Guinness record Sunday with a 2,757-meter cochinita pibil taco, beating the previous record of 1,900 meters. Prepared by 300 volunteers coordinated by a team of chefs from the state of Yucatan, the taco was laid out on tables outside the landmark Cabañas Institute.

Road closure to disrupt city center transport

A one-kilometer section of Guadalajara’s busiest thoroughfares, Avenida Alcalde, will be closed to traffic as of Friday, February 19 as work continues on the city’s third subway (Tren Ligero) line. The avenue will be closed between Calle Ignacio Herrera y Cairo to the south and La Glorieta Normal to the north. This will seriously affect foreigners with business at the Immigration office in the Palacio Federal on Alcalde.  More than 25 bus routes are being rerouted because of the work.

Bullfight to ignite passions Sunday

The passion of bullfighting fans and those who oppose the “sport” will be on full display Sunday, February 22, when Spaniard Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, arguably the world’s greatest rejoneador, comes to town for yet another performance at Guadalajara’s Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso.

State offers outlet to junk unwanted gadgetry

Campaña Electroacopio Jalisco, the annual campaign to collect unwanted electronic items organized by the Jalisco Environmental Agency (Semadet), got underway last weekend in Zapopan.  While items are no longer being accepted in this municipality, the program will continue through mid-March in 60 other municipalities, including Guadalajara, when collection centers will be open on February 27 and 28.
