Comercial Mexicana takes on Superama with fresh food option Fresko

The city’s third Fresko supermarket has opened in the new Espacio Galerias located on Rafael Sanzio, two blocks from the intersection with Avenida Guadalupe.

These upmarket stores are operated by Comercial Mexicana and aim to capture the same market as Walmart’s Superama outlets. Fresko’s directors say only the freshest products are offered for sale, along with many specialities, including a full range of imported luxury, gourmet, organic and gluten-free items.

A press release states that the new store occupies 2,600 square meters of space and sells 30,000 domestic and international products in an “very agreeable” ambience.  As the moment there is free underground parking for 600 vehicles.

The store is immaculately fitted out, with wide aisles, wooden floors, excellent lighting and friendly employees.  The stock and prices, however, do not seem to differ markedly  from  regular Commercial Mexicana superstores.

Espacio Galerias occupies the space formerly owned by the Carneros American Football club.  One tower block of apartments to the rear of the plaza is almost finished – sold out, according to developers  – and a second is planned on the site. Other outlets already up and running include an Office Depot, Chai Cafe and Cafe Flor de Cordoba.

Neighbors fought the construction of the plaza and apartment blocks tooth and nail, sometimes staging all-night vigils outside the site. They garnered scant support from Zapopan city hall and with the first stage of the project almost finished, all opposition appears to have disappeared.

Fresko’s two other stores in the metropolitan area are in Plaza Sania on Avenida Vallarta and on Avenida Lopez Matoes Sur in Colonia Las Galivanes.
