In Jalisco, a state now tragically known as Mexico’s epicenter of enforced disappearances, thousands of families live in constant uncertainty, searching for loved ones who vanish without explanation. Every day, more lives are interrupted, more families left in anguish, and the promise of justice feels increasingly out of reach.
Jalisco has solidified its position as a global leader in the spirits sector, hosting the 27th edition of the Brussels World Spirits Competition from September 7 to 12. With over 2,800 samples from 70 countries, the prestigious event showcased Mexico’s significant role in the sector, contributing 20 percent of the registered samples.
Among the many spirits to be evaluated by experts at the upcoming Concours Mondial de Bruxelles competition (see story right) is raicilla—the potent liquor produced in Jalisco from the lechuguilla agave.
Low-cost airline Volaris has announced the launch of a new route connecting Guadalajara with one of Mexico’s most popular Pacific Coast resorts. Starting on November 2, the airline will offer four weekly flights to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, a pair of neighboring tourist towns in Guerrero known for their distinct vibes.
Jalisco has been selected as the venue for the 27th edition of the Spirits Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
The competition will feature a wide range of spirits, including whisky, cognac, brandy, rum, vodka, tequila, gin, pisco, grappa, baijiu, raicilla and more. These beverages will be evaluated and classified by a panel of world-renowned experts.

This year, 90 students from Jalisco participated in the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge. Of the 203 medals won by Mexico, Jalisco students took home 111—more than half the total.
