In a surprise move, two Mexican golfers currently enjoying success on the PGA Tour have decided to join the rival LIV Golf Invitational Series, which is sponsored by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia.
Guadalajara-born Carlos Ortiz and Mexican-American Abraham Ancer, both 31 years old, will be among the 48 pros playing in the first LIV tournament to be held on U.S. soil, in Portland, Oregon, from June 30 to July 2. The prize money on offer is far superior to PGA Tour events, and all the players have secured attractive sign-on fees to join the series.
On June 9 the PGA Tour suspended all the players who sign up and participate in the LIV series, with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan saying, “We’re not going to allow players to free-ride off our loyal members, the best players in the world.” In response, the LIV series called the PGA’s stance “vindictive … deepening the divide between the Tour and its members.”
