The knives had been out for Ana Guevara, the outgoing head of the National Sports Commission (Conade), long before the 2024 Olympics. Mexico’s rather mediocre medal haul only seems to have further inflamed her critics.
Before the games, Guevara predicted that Mexico would win nine medals. However, the final tally of five prompted her to explain that “the competitive level increases” with each edition of the Olympics. “We have to turn the page and look for a different generation,” she told Fox Sports, appearing to deflect blame for Mexico’s inability to build on its success after winning eight medals at the 2012 London Games—the last time the country won a gold medal.
