Jalisco’s Paralympians head to France with high hopes

Eleven athletes from Jalisco are heading to Paris to participate in the 2024 Paralympic Games, scheduled from August 28 to September 8.

pg7a copyMexico will be represented by 67 parathletes in its delegation, consisting of 37 women and 30 men. In Tokyo 2021, Mexico finished 19th in the medal table with seven golds, two silvers, and 13 bronze medals — four of them won by athletes from Jalisco.

Seven of Jalisco’s athletes will compete in swimming events: Arnulfo Castorena, Mónica Rodríguez, Pedro Rangel, Marcos Zárate, Haidee Aceves, Karina Hernández, and Paola Ruvalcaba. María Guadalupe Navarro will take part in athletics, Eduardo Sánchez in boccia, José de Jesús Castillo in powerlifting and Martha Verdín in table tennis.

Athletes from 184 countries are expected to compete in Paris across 549 events in 22 sports.  The United States will take around 150 athletes to Paris, and Canada 80.

The opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, August 28, at noon (Mexico time) at Paris’ iconic Place de la Concorde.

Parasports are sports played by people with disabilities, including physical and intellectual disabilities. At a competitive level, disability sport classifications are applied to allow people of varying abilities to compete against similar opposition.
