More than 100,000 people packed into Mexico city’s main square, the Zocalo, December 1 to celebrate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s first year in office and listen to this country’s left-leaning president give an impassioned update of his accomplishments to date.

Demonstrating the restraint he has shown throughout his one-year presidency, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responded diplomatically to an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he will designate Mexico’s drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

Revolution Day sees hundreds of student and sports groups perform choreographed athletic routines, and motorized floats depicting historical scenes, with youngsters dressed up as tiny revolutionaries and renowned personalities of the era.

Recognizing that Mexico’s security forces are under-equipped to confront the firepower of the criminal cartels, federal authorities are planning large purchases of weapons to correct the situation.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this week that the new trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico could be approved by the end of this year. 

More than 1,500 state police officers will be on duty to “keep watch” over shopping malls and other heavily trafficked retail zones during El Buen Fin, in which thousands of discounts will be offered during a long four-day weekend, Friday, November 15 through Monday, November 18 (a national holiday marking Revolution Day).
