Catrinas on the catwalk

La Estacion in Riberas del Pilar will hold a bilingual Chatty Catrina evening, Saturday, October 21, 5 to 8 p.m., sponsored by the AnimaMundi Mexico collective. Wear your Catrina attire and make up if you wish.

A cash bar and a la carte menu will be available. Catrina makeup by appointment will be done from 2 to 5 p.m. at La Estacion. A cleansing ritual for spirits and guests begins 5 p.m.

A lighting of the candles will be done at 6:30 p.m. to honor pets. Bring a glass candle, photo, toy or something that reminds you of them and a candle. At 7 p.m., the Catrina presentation will be held and a short film, “To The Bone,” will be shown. A Catrina belly dancer will perform at 7:30 p.m.

Open Circle

Larry Kolczak presents “On The Light Side” at Open Circle Sunday, October 22, 10:30 a.m. at Lake Chapala Society.

Kolczak, a member of the Lake Chapala Writer’s Group, and a regular contributor of articles to El Ojo Del Lago and LCS Conecciones magazine, will be sharing a few of his favorite stories that reflect his uniquely humorous perspective on his day-to-day experiences living here at Lakeside and traveling abroad.
Kolczak’s presentations at the Writer’s Group are always a hit. If you haven’t been following his work in the magazines, now is your chance to find out what you’ve been missing. If you have been enjoying his work all along, now is your chance to meet the man behind the humor.

Kings and Queens

Huara Chess Club holds chess games every Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 7 Chapala. All skill levels welcome from beginner to expert, and all ages from kids to adults with no prior chess experience welcome. Information: 331-428-4180.

Holiday decorations

The Bazar Ajijic holds its second annual three-day Dia de Muertos/Halloween market with more than 30 vendors at La Huerta de Serna in West Ajijic, Thursday, October 26 to Saturday, October 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find decorations, clothes, art and crafts focused on the two special celebrations, as well as food, live music and some general yard-sale type stuff. Hot food can be purchased too.

Donkey rescue

Artists Glenda Rogers, Sherry Simon-Heldt and Louise Neal Pedroza will be selling their art and gifts at a fundraiser to help the burros at Yves’ Restaurant, Friday to Sunday, October 27 to 29, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations for dining and drinks recommended: 376-766-3565.

LCS Halloween party

LCS will hold an “old fashion kids’ Halloween” party and costume contest Sunday, October 29, 2 to 5 p.m.. Kids will need a ticket (free), which are available at the Wilkes Center or LCS office. Musicians Day kermes

A festival of music, and typical street food along with raffles and a bazar will be held Sunday, October 29 beginning 8 a.m. on the main plaza in San Antonio Tlayacapan to help finance the celebration of the Day of the Musician (November 22).

Golf classic

The Country Club de Chapala will hold its 18th annual Cruz Roja Golf Classic Thursday, November 9, 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. This event will benefit the Chapala Red Cross.

Entry fee is 1,700 pesos per player and 1,500 pesos for Country Club members. Singles, pairs and foursomes are welcome. Players must register at the Pro Shop by Saturday, November 4. The entry fee includes golf and cart rental, golf swag bag, continental breakfast, bag lunch, and mixed grill BBQ dinner. Dinner-only tickets are available at the Pro Shop and Yoly’s Estetica in Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic and must be purchased in advance (500 pesos). Remembrance/Veterans Day

• ANAVETS and CVSA will hold a Remembrance and Veterans Day ceremony Saturday, November 11, 10:30 a.m. at Mama’s Musical Bar, Gonzalez Gallo 86 in San Antonio Tlayacapan. A light lunch will be served after the service.

• American Legion Post 7 Chapala will hold a Veterans Day ceremony, Saturday, November 11, 10:55 a.m. at the Post, Morelos 14, Chapala. No one will be allowed to enter once the ceremony begins. Later a dinner will be served at 3 p.m. No breakfast will be served on this day.
