Local artists will hold an art exhibition in the garden of the Castillo de la Floresta, Sunday, July 16, 11 a.m. Poetry, music, song and dance will complement the art in this first of many planned Sunday showings at this venue.

Atequiza Theatre

The third annual Ixtlahuacan Music Festival will be held at the historic theater in Atequiza, Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1. Friday, four different regional orchestras will play a half-hour of music starting at 7 p.m. The line-up is: The Zapopan Symphonic Band, the San Felipe Municipal Band, Cuerdas de Janacatlan and the Tlajomulco Municipal Band. Saturday, five groups take the stage beginning with the Estudiantina de the Casa de la Cultura from Ixlahacan del Rio at 7 p.m., followed by Canto y Musico from Zapotlanejo, two children’s traditional mariachis from El Salto and Tonala, and the Tipical Orchestra from Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos. The program is free of charge. Atequiza is about a 25-minute drive from Chapala on the state highway 35 headed toward La Barca.

Naked Stage

The cast of The Naked Stage production of “Other People’s Money,” (L-R) Director Patricia Guy, Meredith Miller, Susan Quiriconi, Johan Dirkes, Don Beaudreault and Chris L’Ecluse are all set for their debut Friday-Sunday, June 23-25. Written by Alvin Sargent, the play focuses on a Wall Street raider who threatens a “mom and pop” company with a hostile take-over. The patriarch of the company is faced with the task of protecting his company, his family and his employees while maintaining his integrity. He gets help from his daughter, a lawyer, who enjoys the thrust and parry of a legal battle with the raider, who tries to win her heart as well as her company. The play asks the question: Are corporate raiders monsters of capitalism or realists? The curtain goes up every day at 4 p.m. at The Naked Stage Theatre, Hidalgo 261, in Riberas del Pilar. Entrance is 100 pesos.

"Chivito al Precipicio"

Isidro Xilonzóchitl (Xilotl) from San Juan Cosalá at the June 10 opening of his exhibit of paintings and sculptures at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia. The showing at the ground floor gallery continues through July 15. The title “Chivito al Precipicio” (little goat on the precipice), is taken from a slang term for a certain sexual position, reflecting the erotic themes of some of the artist’s works.

Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy it. Seized by obsessive jealousy, he begins a war with Mozart, with music and, ultimately, with God.

Orquesta tipica

The Orquesta Tipica de Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos will perform at a third anniversary concert Saturday, June 3, 8-11 p.m. at the Teatro de Atequiza. The concert at this historic theater, located in the town of Atequiza about 35 minutes from Ajijic, is free of charge. For directions, see the group’s Facebook page.
