Merry mariachi show

Mariachi Imperial from Bogota, Colombia and Mariachi Nuestras Raices from Los Angeles, California raised the rafters with two hours of rousing music played for the enthusiastic audience gathered for the International Marachi Festival show held last Sunday at Ajijic’s La Huerta events salon.

Mariachi bash

What better way to get into the swing of the upcoming Fiestas Patrias than catch the International Mariachi Festival extravaganza scheduled for Sunday, September 1 in Ajijic.  The festive matinee gala showcasing three of the festival’s participating mariachi bands will be held at La Huerta events salon, located on the highway at the western outskirts of town, starting at 3 p.m.

The Naked Stage readers theater group presents “After Play,” written by Anne Meara and directed by Bob Jones, running Friday, August 23; Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25, 4 p.m., at Plaza de la Ribera, Rio Bravo 10-A on the west end of Ajijic.

Viva

The third concert in Viva La Musica’s 2013 summer season takes place at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church on Sunday, August 18, 4 p.m. The concert features the duo of Andres Sarre on piano and Issac Ramirez on cello.  These talented musicians have been playing together for eight years and have participated in numerous competitions, both individually and as a partnership.

Romantic soirée

The Rondalla de Chapala will celebrate its revival after a 15-year hiatus with a musical soireé scheduled for Friday, August 9, 8 to 11 p.m. The Velada Romantica coming-out party will be set on the grounds of the Villa Encantada with Lake Chapala as a natural backdrop. The outdoor events salon is located at Hidalgo 312, next door to the Milagrosa Park at Chapala’s western outskirts.

Iron man gets to work

The Ajijic Plaza remodeling project is finally back on track, with local iron sculptor Ramon Heredia Lares picking up his blowtorch early last week to begin work on the artistic railing that will wrap around the central kiosko bandstand. Although he is barely getting started with the basic framework, his sketches show images of ducks, herons, pelicans and other elements of Lake Chapala’s rich bird life that are focused in the design. The artist expects it will take him another two months to complete the project, including finishing touches to be painted in pastel shades.
