Opals from Magdalena

A month-long exhibit showcasing amazing opals extracted and crafted from the Jalisco town of Magdalena has opened at the Museo de las Artes Populares (Folk Art Museum) in downtown Guadalajara. 

Homage to Frida Kahlo at Museo Regional

An exhibit of works by contemporary artists themed around the image of iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo has opened at Guadalajara’s Museo Regional.  “SuFrida” comprises 70 original artworks that curator Susana Soto Poblette says “reinterpret” Kahlo’s extraordinary impact on modern society, particularly among the young.  The exhibit will be up through March.

The Museo Regional is located at Liceo 60, Guadalajara Centro.  Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. on Sundays). Closed Mondays. Cost: 55 pesos adults; free on Sundays.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra 

The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) returns to the stage of the Teatro Degollado for the first of three belated “end of/beginning of year” concerts that showcase the majestic musical heritage of Austria. JPO Musical Director Marco Parisotto takes the baton for waltzes and other pieces by Johann Strauss Jr., Fritz Kreisler, Eduard Strauss and Maurice Ravel.  JPO members will perform violin solos. 

Teatro Degollado, Friday, January 22, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 24, 12:30 p.m.  150-300 pesos.

City’s lavish new arts complex sets February 9 opening

A concert featuring famed operatic tenor Javier Camarena with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra will headline the opening of Guadalajara’s newest performing arts space, the Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco) on Tuesday, February 9. Tickets are priced from 600 to 1,500 pesos.
