Festival de Artes brighten up city

 

 

Urban artist Sami Estrada works on a live graffiti painting at Plaza Andares Thursday as part of the Festival de Artes de Jalisco (FESTA) program, which sponsors art, dance, music and theater from Jalisco municipalities through Saturday, August 15 at malls and other venues in the metro area.


Beleaguered state orchestra announces September auditions for new contract musicians

Forging ahead with its plan to upgrade the prestigious Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) — or start over from scratch, as critics might say — the orchestra administration has announced auditions for between 20 and 30 wind and string instrumental positions ranging from co-concertmaster and violinist to flute and trombone.

Getting kids keen on museums

Ask many kids if they want to visit a museum and the answer is likely to be a resounding “No Thanks.” But for three young Tapatios visiting 29 of the 32 museums in the state in the space of 22 days was a challenge they relished.

Cirque du Soleil back in town

The magic of Canadian-based circus arts troupe Cirque du Soleil has returned to Guadalajara with “Corteo,” a show that debuted in Montreal in 2005 and has subsequently been seen by eight million people worldwide.

Tuesday recitals

The Degollado Theater opens its doors each Tuesday for the free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera. No tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat. The quality is always exceptional, and the theater will often fill up. August 4: Opera & Crossover with Diana Iliann (soprano), Javier Morales (piano), Orlando Idrovo (cello), Sava Latsanich (violin) and David de la Mora (tenor). August 11: No performance. August 18: Amores Plenos with Agnieszka Slawinska-Barcikowska (soprano), Carlos Aguirre (tenor) and Sergio Hernandez (piano). August 25: Gala concert in conjunction with the Festival de Musica Tequila 2015, also honoring the 150th anniversaries of the foundation of the music conservatories in St. Petersburg (1864), Moscow (1866) and Mexico City (1866), as well as the 75th anniversary of the University of Colima.
