September is known in Mexico as “El Mes Patrio” for the commemoration of historic events that occurred during this month.
Jubilant festivities that are customary at lakeside have been turned on their head this year as the coronavirus takes its toll. Some traditional happenings will take place in virtual forms, others have been cancelled altogether.
The first date scratched from the holiday calendar is September 13 when school kids normally gather with city officials for the Día de los Niños Héroes, recalling the legendary 1847 Heroic Defense of Chapultepec, with kindergartners outfitted in military uniforms recreating the scene of young cadets plunging to their deaths rather than surrender to invading U.S. troops.
