Gentrification—the process of renovating urban areas that leads to the displacement of the original population by newcomers with greater purchasing power—sparked a rowdy protest last week in Mexico City.
Demonstrators rallied to express their discontent with the wave of foreigners who have taken over popular inner-city neighborhoods. Many raised signs bearing hostile slogans: Gentrification is not progress, it’s dispossession. You’re not an expat, you’re an invader. Gringo, go home. Some who let their ire get the best of them vandalized a Starbucks outlet and other prime gathering spots frequented by foreign tourists and digital nomads.
