A quirky look at Lake Chapala history

1. Lake Chapala is at the center of one of the most seismologically active areas in the world.

The lake itself resulted from these drastic earth movements some 12 million years ago, to become a massive volcanic crater. But since only a handful of hippies were there during that time, few people remember it.

2. According to Chapala.com, the city of Chapala was founded in 1538, possibly taking its name from chief Chapalac, an early tribal chieftain. Or, from the Mexican word “Chapatla,” the “place where pots abound” (that’s pots plural), referring to the native practice of appeasing a god by throwing pots with earlobe blood into Lake Chapala. (This is on record.) Clearly, the answer is the former. As gods go, this one wasn’t taken seriously.
