Poultry, cheesecake dishes light up CASA meet

The regular monthly meeting of the Culinary Association Society of Ajijic (CASA) on Monday, November 10 featured a membership competition of poultry main dishes and cheesecakes.

Judging the two categories were chef Alejandro del Rio Diaz from Restaurant Monte Cristo; Hector España Ramos, co-owner of his family’s restaurant, Manix; and the Guadalajara Reporter’s Dale Hoyt Palfrey.

The first-place winner in the chicken main dish category was Catherine Suter’s savory Thai meatballs. Beth Cathcart’s tarragon chicken with marsala mushroom sauce and Judith Greenburg’s chicken mabella tied for second place. The third place nod went to Carole Wolff’s stuffed chicken breast delight. Wolff’s dish also won the presentation and the People’s Choice awards.

Monique Grossman took the cheesecake presentation vote and also won first place with her amaretto almond cheesecake with apricot glaze. In second place was Margaret Ancira’s light-as-a-feather cheesecake, and third place went to Wesley Fink’s double dark chocolate cheesecake. Mary Ann Waite took the cheesecake People’s Choice award with Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake.

A report from the October 26 picnic was presented. More than 120 guests attended the barbecue event. The proceeds were donated to Operation Compassion Feed Ministry, which is known as the San Antonio Soup Kitchen, and Operation Feed in San Juan Cosalá.

In December, CASA will hold the group’s annual holiday party. The next CASA competition is scheduled Monday, January 19, 4 p.m. at Min Wah Restaurant. The categories are soups, stews and chili and cupcakes.
