Tarantulas

Don’t miss the Power Point presentation by tarantula expert and protector Rodrigo Orozco, who is  featured on page 11 of this week’s newspaper. His talk is scheduled at the Yacht Club (Club Nautica La Floresta) in La Floresta, Ajijic on Thursday, April 11, 8 p.m.

A donation of 100 pesos to help keep his sanctuary going would be greatly appreciated.

Dinner dance

The 904 Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association in Ajijic held its 10th Annual Dinner Dance on March 21 at the Hotel Danza del Sol.

The event was well received by members, guests and, as always, by members of AEMA (Association of the Mexican Military Aviation School).  Wing members are gratified that their relations with their sister aviation association here in Mexico are so cordial. Yvonne Chin, the Canadian Consul in Guadalajara, a devoted social member of the Wing, addressed them briefly. The other special guest was Capitan P. A. Rafael Hernandez Rivera, president of the Guadalajara AEMA Group.

Doggie days

The Lakeside Spay and Neuter Ranch will hold a yard sale on  Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, on the Jones’ tennis court (Paseo del Mirador 14 in La Floresta). Doors will open at 9 a.m.

If you have anything you wish to donate, please drop it off at HandyMail or at PetCare, the new pet store in Riberas del Pilar. All items will be gratefully accepted. They can use everything.

Keep an eye on this column for information on Lakeside Spay and Neuter’s upcoming “Spring Fling.”

Bridge

If you’re a “serious” duplicate bridge player who also supports Cruz Roja (and who doesn’t?), consider participating in the Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club’s charity play during April.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to support Cruz Roja’s ambulance and clinic services. Join the sessions, experience a great day of duplicate bridge, and feel good about benefiting this vital institution.

Canadian Club

The Canadian Club meets Wednesday, April 10 at La Nueva Posada, when Ajijic’s town administrator (delegado) Hector España will be the guest speaker.

España will talk about progress made in several local projects since he took office last month.

There will also be the annual meeting and election of directors. The social hour begins at 3 p.m. and the program begins at 4 p.m. There is a 50-peso charge for guests. Everyone is welcome.

Seminar

The April 9 noon seminar, available for Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members, will be chaired by Ron Mullenaux. It features (via TED Internet podcast) psychologist Dan Gilbert speaking on “The surprising science of happiness.”

Gilbert, author of “Stumbling on Happiness,” challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our “psychological immune system” lets us feel truly happy even when things don’t go as planned.

Upscale Resale

During these very warm days Upscale Resale Bazaar will open only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning April 15. When the rains and “sunbirds” return, the hours will resume to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Consignments are taken on Mondays and Wednesdays, and donations are welcome anytime. Household wares, small appliances and light reading are especially welcome at this time.

Upscale Resale is run by volunteers to help support two children’s homes: Hope House, in Ixtlahuacan, and LaOla in Jocotepec.  Both have received new children recently and appreciate all the help the shop and the Lakeside community provide.

Upscale Resale is located on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar, just east of Maskaras clinic and the bus stop in front of Mom’s restaurant.  The telephone number is (376) 106-0882.

Medical

Dr. Sam Thelin of the Chapala Red Cross will present the second part of an overview of the Lakeside emergency service as part of the Cruz Roja general meeting on Wednesday, April 10.

Those attending the presentation will find out about the services offered at the Cruz Roja clinic, private hospitals in Jalisco and how to assemble their own emergency “Be Prepared” packet.

Thelin will offer more details about the medical service flowchart to help people develop their own personal emergency medical plan.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. It will begin at 2 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) gazebo.

Singles fun

The LCS Singles group is sponsoring a “Picnic/Potluck” on Friday,  April 12 at the Jocotepec malecon, starting at 11 am. Balloons will mark the specific site, and organizers suggest those attending may want to bring lawn chairs.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks will be provided. Beer and margaritas will cost 10 pesos. Wine is on a “bring your own” basis.  A variety of games will be played.

Admission is 50 pesos and a dish to serve 5-6 people. Folks with last names starting from A to H are to bring a salad, those from I-P are responsible for side dishes such as coleslaw, beans, potato salad, etc., and those from Q-Z will bring desserts.

For change-making purposes, nothing greater than a 100-peso bill will be accepted for admission or purchases.

Carpooling is encouraged, but Jocotepec is also easily reached by bus. Buses stop at the Pemex station on the outskirts of Jocotepec, just a short walk to the malecon.

For more information or to RSVP, those wishing to attend can access the new Singles blog at LCSsingles.blogspot.com.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will observe the Second Sunday of Easter 2013 by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake (Carretera 10, Chula Vista, Ajijic).

Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic is “My Lord and my God!,” based on John 20:19-31. Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake have a common fellowship time between their two services in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel from about 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Join them for a meaningful and enjoyable worship experience and great fellowship.

Presbyterian

Now that we are past Lent and into the Easter season, Pastor Ross Arnold is returning to his series on Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of Mark. The message for Sunday, April 7 is “Good Soil,” using Mark 4:1-20 as the text. Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. The 10 a.m. Friday morning interactive Bible study continues in the book of Galatians. (The Bible study is designed so you can drop in at any time – you don’t need to wait for a new book or topic to begin.) Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Little Chapel

The Little Chapel by the Lake will celebrate the first Sunday of the month, Communion Sunday, with a pot-luck luncheon after their 11:15 a.m. service.  During the service, the Reverend Gene Raymer will speak on the topic, “Easter Every Day.”

Tuesday, April 9, the elders will hold their regular monthly meeting and then at 6 p.m. there will be a presentation of “The Harbinger” in the fellowship hall. The public is invited.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

On the Second Sunday of Easter we see faith being tested by doubt, joy being confronted with uncertainty. Thomas didn’t see the risen Jesus on Easter Day, and refused to believe until the resurrection was “proven” to him. Thomas’ reaction is perhaps the most understandable of all, the easiest for any modern person to identify with. How can we believe without seeing? That’s just a piece of the question wrestled with in this week’s sermon, “Why Wounds in a Risen Body?” This week worship at St. Andrew’s returns to the “low season” schedule, consisting of a single 10 a.m. service every Sunday, followed by a time of refreshment, welcome and fellowship in the Garden. Wednesday, April 10, the “Company of Gentlemen” welcomes the men of the parish to come together for their monthly breakfast in the church kitchen. The welcome is genuine, the fellowship is first-rate, and at 30 pesos, the price is right. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar. On Sunday, April 7, Jan Steinbright will give a talk about her experiences with earth-centered religion. The service will be followed by a coffee hour.  For more information please call 766-1119 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
