Lakeside Freethinkers

Members of the Lakeside Freethinkers will propose topics for discussion during the Wednesday, November 18, 4 p.m. open meeting at La Nueva Posada Restaurant.

During the October meeting, members weighed the division of thought among atheists. The discussion usually continues over dinner following the meeting.

The group defines a “freethinker” as a person who identifies himself or herself as an atheist, agnostic, secular humanist or skeptic. They believe that individuals should not accept ideas proposed as truth without recourse to knowledge and reason. They reject belief in the supernatural and rely on science and reason to guide their lives.

Open Circle

James Tipton, Robert Bruce Drynan, Mel Goldberg, and Antonio Ramblés explore the capacity of the human spirit to endure the seemingly unendurable and the transformative consequences during the program segment of the Sunday, November 15, 10 a.m. meeting of Open Circle at the LCS.

The men who collaborated on the creation of their recently published new anthology, “Embracing the Fog: The Transformative Power of Crisis,” will talk about trust, acceptance, and honor put to the test by extreme life experiences. The book includes lessons drawn from stories of ordinary people cast into extraordinary circumstances. The presentation will include unpublished commentary by each author on experiences which served as the genesis of his work.

Goldberg taught high school and college literature and writing in California, Illinois, Arizona and as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in England. Rambles has authored two novels and a collection of short stories. Tipton is a prolific poet, book reviewer, columnist and associate editor. Drynan used his Army intelligence and international business experience to craft a series of three novels.
