Pandemic propels operatic group into new territory

The 25 members of the Jalisco State Choir (Coro del Estado de Jalisco), based in Guadalajara, have long been accustomed to the challenges of performing art music, from zarzuela, oratorio, opera and sacred music to Mexican music.

pg5aBut the group’s director, Chema Lopez, notes that the pandemic, which appears to muzzle and imprison at home singers who are primarily disciplined to perform for live audiences, in reality has required new and demanding types of work from them – namely the creation of more than 40 music videos, which are freely distributed online.

No, the musicians are not stuck at home eating bon-bons. “Work during the pandemic has multiplied,” Lopez points out. “Not only do we sing – we record, we edit and we improve other abilities.”
