Mexico-US music competition to promote violence-free songs

The Mexican government has announced the launch of a binational music competition, “México Canta,” aimed at promoting music that does not condone crime.

“It’s a historic partnership between the government and the private sector, focused on young people and designed to foster and strengthen a new wave of Mexican music,” said Claudia Curiel, Mexico’s Secretary of Culture.

She continued: “What is this new Mexican music? One that promotes and preserves traditional Mexican sounds … with themes and emotions that have nothing to do with songs that glorify violence.”

Registration for the competition will be open from April 28 to May 30 at mexicocanta.gob.mx. The competition will take place in four phases, in Mexico and the United States, with the final scheduled for October 5.
