Deluge batters city, 1,000 homes are waterlogged

Lopez Rivas described the storm as the “worst of the season so far.”  Residents of 120 homes called authorities to report “extensive damage” to their properties and belongings.

The deluge also affected 13 schools that were unable to open for classes the following morning.  In total, 4,500 students were obliged to stay at home.

Residents were shocked by the quantity of rain that fell in their neighborhoods in such a short space of time.  Underground drains quickly became full and the excess water had nowhere to go but onto residential streets and avenues.

Streets in some neighborhoods, Balcones de Oblatos in particular, were transformed into raging rivers as the fierce currents dragged cars into each other.

Another part of the city that suffered badly in the storm was the zone around Cinco de Febrero, Calzada del Ejército, R. Michel and González Gallo.
Intersections where water levels rose as high as one meter included Juan Pablo II and Periférico Oriente; Medrano and Malecón; Belisario Domínguez and Sierra Morena; Revolución and Calzada Independencia and on Lázaro Cárdenas, between 18 de Marzo and Fuelle.

Authorities decided to suspend the Macrobus service after severe flooding on Gobernador Curiel, leaving many people with no way of getting to their places of work or schools.
