Traffic gridlock chokes Lopez Mateos

The start of announced repaving work on the stretch of Avenida Lopez Mateos between the Periferico and the Bugambilias subdivision took some Guadalajara motorists by surprise on Friday.

Traffic quickly backed up in the northbound direction, an occurrence that neighbors and frequent users of the zone will have to get used to over the next three months.

The Zapopan Public Works Department has deployed 20 extra staff to help keep traffic flowing as the project progresses.

Congestion along the 1.5-kilometer stretch is inevitable, even though four lanes of traffic, including the laterals, will always remain open.  Supervisors will allocate lanes depending on the volume of traffic in either direction.

Zapopan authorities suggest motorists consider using alternative routes other than Lopez Mateos to enter and leave the southern metropolitan area, in particular the Camino Real a Colima, which runs from San Agustin (a few kilometers south of the Santa Anita neighborhood) to the Colon intersection on the Periferico.
