Potential 2016 Olympic gymnast gunned down outside charro arena

Jaime Humberto Romero Moran, 22, and Raul Trejo Santos, 23, were confronted by a group of men near the Lienzo Charro Ignacio Zermeño (charreria stadium). According to a police report, one of the aggressors drew a gun and shot the pair dead. The group then fled the scene in a grey Ford Lobo and another unspecified white vehicle.

Romero won gold, silver and bronze medals in the National Youth Olympics last May. He was set to participate in the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, where he would have competed for a place in the 2016 Olympic Games. He combined his gymnastic activities with full-time study, and was taking a degree in law at the Universidad del Valle de Mexico (UVM).

“He was a healthy kid, with dreams,” Romero’s mother said in a radio interview. “Not everyone who is killed in Mexico is a criminal.”

She also revealed the shocking manner she and her family learned the news. “My son, like the responsible citizen he was, was carrying his identification, with his name and our details, yet the authorities didn’t inform us of anything, and unfortunately we learned of his death after my daughter saw a posting on the internet.
