State governor attends Paris climate conference

Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval has highlighted his administration’s efforts to thwart deforestation and environmental deterioration in this state at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21).

Sandoval this week joined counterparts from various nations at a meeting focusing on how subnational leaders are showing the way in adopting deep emissions targets, while creating economic opportunity at the same time.

All the participants in Tuesday’s  meeting were members of the U.N. Governors Climate and Forest Task Force, a group that has adopted policies that aim to achieve at least an 80 percent reduction target or an under two tons per capita emissions target.

Sandoval centered his talk on the work his government has carried out to conserve Jalisco’s forests and wooded zones and prevent deforestation. He said his administration has seen positive short-term results after finding common ground with farmers, local authorities and those who live and work in state’s wooded areas.

Other leaders at the Paris meeting were Jerry Brown, governor of California; Manuel Gambini Rupay, governor of Ucayali, Peru; Ben Ayade, governor of Cross River State, Nigeria and Jose Melo, governor of Amazonas, Brazil.
