Scrutiny turns to GDL light train network

A day after this week’s tragic metro line overpass collapse in Mexico City that killed 24 people, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro ordered an immediate safety review of Guadalajara’s three Tren Ligero lines, with special emphasis on the elevated section of the recently opened 21-kilometer Line Three.

pg1bA section of Line 12 of the capital’s extensive subway/light train system gave way suddenly on Monday evening, sending two train wagons plummeting from an elevated overpass onto vehicles circulating on the road below.  In addition to the fatalities, 79 people were injured, including three children.

Some of same the contractors hired to build Line 12, known as the Linea Dorada and opened eight years ago, were also used in the construction of Guadalajara’s third Tren Ligero line, inaugurated in early 2020. In addition, an elevated extension to Line One, crossing the city’s northern beltway (Periferico), opened last year.

Alfaro stressed that Tapatios need have no doubts about the safety of the metro area’s Tren Ligero network, which he said is subject to “a regular and constant maintenance program, allowing us to detect any possible failures and deal with unforeseen events that arise in the day-to-day operation.”
