Bid made to rename a park that already has two names

The city’s gay community has presented Guadalajara city hall with an official petition to change the name of the Parque de la Revolución (at Juarez and Federalismo) to the Plazoleta de la Diversidad (Diversity Plaza).

The park, which is also colloquially known as the Parque Rojo due to the color of its sidewalks, has been a focal point for the sexual diversity movement in Guadalajara since the 1970s and 1980s.

The park, created in 1935 by architect Luis Barragán, lies on the site of a former penitentiary and has been a traditional meeting place for the LGBTTTIQ+ community, as well as a frequent location for protest by groups of (mainly) young persons.

More than 600 signatures were collected for the petition.

The park honors Mexican Revolution protagonists Francisco I. Madero and Venustiano Carranza, whose statues are prominently displayed. It is also home to the end-of-line Tren Ligero (line two) station.
