Some thieves will never be caught

Bicycle theft is one crime in Mexico that delinquents are almost guaranteed to get away with.

In the past four years only two people have been arrested in connection with stealing bicycles in Guadalajara.

The vast majority of victims don’t bother to file a complaint. The 44 complaints made in 2011 yielded no arrests; 54 denuncias were filed in 2012, but again police were unable to arrest anyone. Two people were detained in 2013 but none so far this year.

Studies done on the perception of criminality in Mexico suggest that two bicycles are stolen each day in Guadalajara. Word on the street would likely put that figure ten times higher.
