Two women hikers who died after a tree fell on their tent in Tapalpa cannot be considered “victims” of Hurricane Patricia because they failed to heed warnings and take refuge in local cabins, senior Jalisco government officials said Monday.
The tourists, from Coahuila, Mexico and Argentina, were part of a group of around 100 hikers who visit Tapalpa each year.
Both President Enrique Peña Nieto and Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval have declared a “saldo blanco”(zero deaths) from the hurricane that careened into the Pacific Coast last Friday evening.
Jalisco Civil Protection officials reported that four people died in an automobile accident at kilometer 103 of the Guadalajara-Colima toll road on Friday afternoon. It is still unclear whether weather conditions were largely responsible for the accident.
