All adults to get jabs by end of October, president vows

On Wednesday, May 19, Mexico’s federal government celebrated the arrival of another batch of 500,000 Covid vaccines, bringing the total number of doses received in this country to date to more than 30 million.

“This a special day,” tweeted Foreign Scretary Marcelo Ebrard on Twitter. “By the end of May, Mexico will have received 40 million doses.”

The recent surge in vaccine arrivals prompted President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to declare that Mexico will have administered at least one dose of vaccine to all its citizens over the age of 18 by the end of October – some 80 million people.

“And they made fun of us, saying we wouldn’t finish vaccinating until 2025 or 2026,” he laughed during his morning press conference on Tuesday.

Shots for people aged between 50 and 59 have already started in some areas of Mexico, and the program to inoculate 40 to 49 year-olds will begin in July. All over 60s have received at least one dose of vaccine.
