US raises Mexico to Covid Level Four

With the Omicron wave peaking in Mexico, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has moved this country into the “Very High” Covid-19 level, which now numbers almost 130 nations.

The CDC recommendation, however, is unlikely to deter many U.S. travelers seeking warmer weather this winter. Mexico has kept its air transportation borders open throughout the pandemic, and still does not require travelers to show proof vaccination or negative Covid tests. Mexico, especially its beach resorts, has been the most popular destination for U.S. tourists in the past two years.

The CDC places a destination at Level Four when more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents are registered in the past 28 days.

The CDC recommends “avoiding travel” to countries included in its highest risk Level Four category, but says, “if you must travel, make sure you are vaccinated and up to date with your Covid-19 vaccines before travel.”
