Covid mini-surge doesn’t require behavioral changes, say health authorities

A cautionary warning about Covid in Mexico issued by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM) has been played down by federal health authorities, as well the Jalisco state government.

According to a UNAM press release, changes in the behavior of the virus in recent weeks has resulted in a rise in the number of positive diagnostic tests,  revealing that Covid is “circulating widely at the community level in much of the country.”

Although the situation is “calm,” Mexico’s largest academic institution recommended people use face masks in confined places, especially those with little or no ventilation, and when in close proximity to others.

Jalisco Public Health Director Gabriela Mena acknowledged a small increase in cases, and predicted a rise in respiratory complications as a result of the rainy climate, but said no special measures were required at this time.
