World’s most dangerous cities: Mexico has 7 in top 10

The 2024 study by the Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice (CCSPyJP) reveals that 20 of the world’s 50 most violent cities are in Mexico, with seven Mexican cities ranking among the ten most dangerous cities globally.

pg2The study uses official data on intentional homicides, focusing on cities with populations of over 300,000 inhabitants.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti tops the list with a homicide rate of 139.31 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the western Mexican city of Colima ranks second with 126.95. Other Mexican cities in the top ten include Acapulco (102.28), Manzanillo (92.17), Tijuana (91.35) and Ciudad Obregón (89.2). Celaya and Zamora occupy the eighth and ninth spots, respectively. Other cities with high homicide rates include Cuernavaca, Ciudad Juárez, Uruapan, Irapuato, Culiacán, Chihuahua, Zacatecas and León.

According to René Bolio, president of the Mexican Commission for Human Rights (CMDH), the average homicide rate in Mexico (approximately 55.8 per 100,000 inhabitants) is nine times higher than the world average rate of 6.2.
