Federal authorities confirmed Sunday that security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho," the historic leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in the municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco.
The death of one of Mexico's most-wanted drug lords has triggered a coordinated response from criminal groups, with roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and attacks on commercial establishments reported in at least 11 states.
The Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) announced in a statement that the operation, carried out in coordination with the National Intelligence Center, the Attorney General's Office, and Mexican Army Special Forces, was intended to capture Oseguera Cervantes. The confrontation resulted in four attackers killed and three seriously wounded, who later died during air transport to Mexico City. Among the deceased was "El Mencho," though the Sedena noted that forensic analysis will be required to confirm his identity.
The statement highlighted the participation of U.S. intelligence agencies, which provided "complementary information" in cooperation with Mexican authorities.
In a post on Sunday afternoon on “X”, President Claudia Sheinbaum said “activities are proceeding normally in most parts of the country.” She expressed her “recognition to the Mexican Army, National Guard, Armed Forces and Security Cabinet,” adding that “we work every day for the peace, security, justice and well-being of Mexico.”
