Gifted children unrecognized in Jalisco

Approximately 40,000 gifted children are living in Jalisco, but only three percent of this population has been identified, according to the Center of Attention to Talent (Cedat).

Psychologist Andrew Almazan Anaya has warned teachers and parents that gifted learners often display signs of distraction and are often diagnosed with behavioral conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or bipolar disorder.

“It’s easier to medicate children than to give them specialized attention,” the psychologist said.

Without appropriate attention, the capacity of children with an IQ above 130 points is often diminished by the time they reach adulthood, said Almazan Anaya.

“Like any other muscle, the brain requires stimulation. If there is not sufficient cerebral exercise children lose their skills because they lose interest.”

Cedat reports that Jalisco is the state with the third highest rates of intelligence in Mexico, behind Mexico City (CDMX) and Tamaulipas.
