Tourism Tianguis leaves coffers bare

Jalisco tourism authorities dipped into their pockets and used up all of their 2016 promotional budget at the Tianguis Turistico trade show, staged at Expo Guadalajara at the end of April.

They will now have to go cap in hand to state and federal authorities to make up the 15-million-peso shortfall required to maintain a steady rhythm of promotion for key destinations such as Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, Tourism Secretary Enrique Flores said this week.

Stressing that hosting the nation’s premier tourism show had been a huge success – it drew hundreds of international media representatives – Flores admitted that the promotion of Jalisco “mustn’t halt” due to a lack of funds. The cost to the state of staging the four-day Tianguis Turistico is estimated to be 66 million pesos.
